Palanga International Airport - All Information on Palanga International Airport (PLQ)

Palanga International Airport, also known by its IATA code of PLQ, is an international airport close to Palanga's resort town, which is situated on the Baltic Sea. One of Lithuania's busiest airports, it serves primarily medium- and short-haul flights inside Europe.

It primarily serves the areas of Samogitia and western Latvia, as well as the Baltic Sea resorts of Palanga and the city of Klaipeda in Lithuania. Connecting flights are available to municipalities in Scandinavia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, and the Baltic States' largest city, Riga, Latvia.

Between Palanga and Sventoji is the airport. Due to the influx of tourists throughout the summer, the airport sees an increase in passenger traffic.

Several services are available to passengers at Palanga International Airport, including luggage carts, left luggage, a lost and found office, automated teller machines, free Wi-Fi, a VIP lounge, duty-free shops selling cosmetics and alcohol, restaurants, and restaurants and cafes.

The complex also features several different ground transit choices.

History of Palanga International Airport

In 1937, operations began at what is now 7 kilometers east of the airport's current terminal, close to what is now the Palanga-Darbnai road. It was there that the pilots of the Lithuanian Air Force received their training. In 1939, the Kaunas-Palanka route became the first in Lithuania to be serviced by a regularly scheduled aviation service.

The airfield saw service from the Soviet Air Force twice: once in 1940–1941 and again in 1945–1963. Soon after WWII ended, a brand-new airport and accompanying infrastructure appeared at the present location.

The airport was opened to the general public in 1963. After a re-registration in 1991, Palanga Airport became a government-owned and -operated facility.

The airport has had yearly passenger growth since 1993. The airport terminal was refurbished from 1994 to 1997. The airport's passenger services and baggage handling have been upgraded to meet ICAO standards.

The flight control facility was upgraded in the years 1994 and 1995. The airport apron and taxiways were updated in 1998, and the runway surface was repaved in 1996–1997. The airport signed on with the primary international aviation association ACI in 1997. (Airports Council International).

Passengers in 2004 surged by over 60% compared to 2003, after Lithuania became a member of the European Union.

In 2007, building on the North terminal continued to increase the terminal's square footage by 2000 square meters and conform with the Schengen border crossing system.

Between June and October of 2007, high-intensity lighting was installed, and the runway centerline lights were embedded, expanding runway 01/19 to its current 2280 x 45-meter size.

Due to 2007's construction advancements, maintenance of long-distance routes is now feasible. Currently, the airport employs about 200 employees.

About Palanga, Lithuania

Palanga's village sits on the Baltic Sea coast in western Lithuania and is a popular vacation destination. With 18 kilometers (11 miles) of sandy beaches and dunes as high as 300 meters, Zalgiris is Lithuania's most popular summer destination.

The areas of Sventoji, Nemirseta, Biting, the Palanga International Airport, and the rest of the city are all administratively part of Palanga, a city municipality in Lithuania.

Near Sventoji, archaeologists uncovered a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, indicating that people had lived in the area for at least 5,000 years.

Palanga, populated by the Curonians during the 10th and 13th centuries, was one of the most critical cities in Mguva Land. Because of its convenient location on the historic Amber Road route soon flourished as a hub for commerce and the arts.

It was first attested in writing in 1161 when Danish King Valdemar I landed there with his troops and conquered the Curonian stronghold.

The people of Palanga faced threats from both the Teutonic Knights to the south and the Livonian Brothers of the Sword to the north between the 13th and 15th centuries. The enemy could not take control of the Lithuanian coastline between Klaipeda and Ventoji.

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania received the Treaty of Melno Palanga in 1422. Eventually, Sventoji Harbour became an important commercial hub. In 1685, British merchants began setting up shops in Ventoji.

In 1701, during the Great Northern War, the Swedish Army plundered Palanga, demolished the Sventoji port, and closed the entrance with boulders.

As a result of the Third Partition of Poland and Lithuania in 1795, Lithuania was annexed by the Russian Empire. In 1819, Palanga relocated to Grobin County, located in the Courland Governorate from the neighboring Vilna Governorate.

Count Micha Tyszkiewicz purchased the Palanga manor in 1824. (1761–1839). Grandson Jozef Tyszkiewicz constructed a dock and started shipping passengers and bricks to Liepaja.

The vacation town of Palanga was established in the early nineteenth century.

Since its construction in 1892, the pier has welcomed many visitors for strolls and other activities.

Feliks Tyszkiewicz, son of Józef Tyszkiewiczs, commissioned the renowned German architect Franz Schwechten to build the neo-renaissance Tikeviiai Palace in 1897.

Highways connect Klaipeda and Siauliai to the municipality. The city is not served by any railroads. Kretinga, the district capital and largest city in the vicinity, has the nearest rail connection.

Many visitors visit Palanga every summer to enjoy the city's beaches and relaxed coastal vibe. Jonas Basanaviius Street, a pedestrian-only thoroughfare during the high season, is the epicenter of a carnival. There are many options for dining, drinking, and having fun, including numerous rides and attractions.

Anybody can view botanical gardens at the Palanga Amber Museum. At Anaiai Ethnographic Cemetery, you can visit graves from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sculptures Garden features 28 works of modern art by artists from Armenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine.
